How I Got Started Writing

July 29, 2020

I have had a desire to write stories since I was in middle school. I wrote mostly about fairies and mystical creatures.

It wasn't until the early 2000's, after years of bizarre dreams, that I decided that I should take my dreams and turn them into a book. After that, I began writing down my dreams, adding more story lines, until I finally had an actual book. I called the book The Lost Key, but I didn't have the nerve to publish it at that time. I was amazed at how personal a book becomes when you put your heart and soul into it. Because of that reason, I held onto the book for years.

During this time, my six year old daughter persuaded me to come up with a story to entertain her. Figuring it was a one-time only story, I told it, and moved on. But she didn't. That evening she wanted me to tell her the same story. It took a while, but I did remember the story, and decided I may need to write it down in case she asked again. With my brain spinning, I decided to not only write it down, but draw, colorize, and publish this story for her. On May 8, 2014, The Purple Rabbit was published.

Publishing The Purple Rabbit was the push I needed to put The Lost Key into motion again. On May 20, 2014, The Lost Key was finally published.

These two books were the foundation of my professional writing career. If you are sitting on a story that you are dying to write, I encourage you to do so, it is very fulfilling!
