How to Find Inspiration for the Storyline of Your Book

July 10, 2024

Writers can find their inspiration in the most unique places. It could be during their morning walk, picking up their kids from school, or stopping at their favorite cafe for a cup of coffee.

I personally have found inspiration from realism paintings. A great artist can paint a moment in time, but an author's imagination will try to figure out the story before the image was captured. I remember laying on my grandmothers sofa, and I would wonder about the little boy painted in the art piece. If I was a little older, that image may have been the inspiration of my first book. If you don't have realism artwork hanging around your grandmothers house, a trip to an art museum may be a great place to start looking for a little inspiration.

Have you ever overheard the end of someone's conversation while you were in a public location, but completely missed the beginning? A writer can use the little piece of a story being told, and mold it into their next best selling novel. Sometimes all it takes is a little push in the right direction for a spark of a story to form.

I have heard many authors say that they get their inspiration from their dreams. I actually am one of those authors. Our imagination is on overdrive while we are sleeping! Unfortunately, as soon as we are awake, those dreams begin to fade away to nothingness. That is where I started to keep a journal next to my bed. That way I can start writing down my dreams as soon as I wake-up. (I do have a dream journal you can purchase if you are interested.)

Have you ever went back and read your family history? I know my family history has some pretty interesting characters in it! And a bonus, while searching through your family history, you may even find articles about events that happened years ago that may peak your interest.

Inspiration for your story can come from anywhere! You just have to keep your eyes and ears open to the world around you. You never know where your next inspiration will appear!
